Chairperson Glenda Gourley and Kate Underwood, Training and Education Manager from The Chip Group visited Michael in Rotorua to present him with this prestigious award. The award is to celebrate that Michael has trained and inspired hundreds of operators throughout NZ to follow his example and adopt the Industry Standards for best practice frying.
“Michael gives his time enthusiastically”, says Kate. “He is a true inspiration to the industry.” Through his involvement with The Chip Group he has been able to inspire operators like himself to remove a huge amount of fat from the NZ food supply.
In Matamata alone he was able to help motivate 10 operators to remove a staggering 1711kg of fat from the Matamata food supply – find out more here. This proves categorically that if a lot of individual operators make small changes to their frying techniques then cumulative affect can have a big impact on the food supply.
This is the first time The Chip Group has made any award such as this, and is reflective of his unique contribution to better the industry.
On behalf of The Chip Group we would like to congratulate Michael and his family and staff who allow Michael to get away and share his time helping others better their businesses.

This year we hope to have even more New Zealand chip operators trained and educated about what it takes to cook the best chips! As we run the bi-annual Best Chip Shop Competition we also plan to educate the general public to ensure they support those operators who are working to reduce the fat in the chips they serve.
Bring on 2013, the year of ‘Better chips with less fat!’
A big thanks to Michelle Robinson for her input in the story.

]]>With the help of Kristen Clarke and Zhuoshi Zhang – co-ordinators of the Glen Innes Healthy Kai initiative. The Chip Group training was used as part of their involvement in this program. Despite being a small scale forum, our message was the same….
Follow our Industry Standards and you will:
Attendees were awarded with their Tips for Better Chips poster, a badge, a certificate and free product from our sponsors Groenz. It was also really great to see a variety of operators, including a Turkish Kebab takeaway and a bakery. Sharing our best practice frying tips with as many people as possible is part of our intent, as our tips can be used when frying other foods, not just chips.
Thanks again to Kristen, Zhoushi and her Glen Innes operators for completing the training, if you are out in that area- be sure to support the following businesses! For more of the latest info Like us on Facebook here.
