On Monday 10th October, The Chip Group, Healthy Families Waitakere and Sport Waitakere hosted their second training workshop teaching West Auckland clubs and food businesses everything there is to know about deep fried chips.

Participants from a range of sports clubs attended, including: Lynn-Avon United Assn Football Club, West Auckland Association Football Club, Western Magpies Softball Club, The Fono, Waitemata Seagulls Rugby League Club, Waitemata Association Football & Sports Club, Te Atatu Rugby League Club and the staff from Fernz Catering, Fair Play Caterers, Able-catering and The Fish and Chip Shop in Westmere.

Held at Jack Colvin Park in Te Atatu, West Auckland – the training ran through a series of videos covering all of The Chip Group’s ‘Industry Standards’. Topics included: chip size, portion size, cooking time, basket drainage, oil temperature, oil type, oil maintenance, filtering and cleaning, salt and business tips. Each video was followed by a series of short quiz questions.

The relaxed interactive atmosphere allowed operators to ask questions, network with each other and ultimately go home feeling inspired to improve the health of their community – by reducing fat content one chip at a time. There were plenty of prizes on offer thanks to: Mr Chips, Shore Mariner, Groenz and The Warehouse Lincoln Rd, including free chips, badges, magnets, posters, roasting dishes, sauces and more.

With such a wide range of attendees it was great to see that overall feedback from the event was hugely positive – “Training was great”, “well presented”, “I found it all very interesting”, “very informative workshop”. All of the recipients were most looking forward to receiving an official Chip Group Training Certificate and they all enjoyed the pace of the training – infact, the only thing that would have made it better some said was to have had hot chips to eat!

The Chip Group are really looking forward to working closely with other Healthy Families organisations throughout NZ and hosting more of these FREE training workshops.
