Smaller salt shakers, (with less holes!) are thought to be a great way to reduce the amount of salt (sodium) we are putting on our chips. Research in the UK known as the ‘health by stealth’ idea totally supports our mission to help reduce the fat and salt in deep fried chips sold here in NZ. Smaller Salt Article Nov 2015

By asking your customers if they would like salt, salting sparingly or using a salt sachet your customers are likely to consume far less salt. Using smaller salt shakers is another great option as there are less holes for the salt to fall from. Alternatively taping or blocking off half of the holes on the lid will mean less salt comes out as you shake it.

As operators working behind the deep fryer you have complete control over how much fat and salt is added to your chips.

This study reinforced that making small gradual changes, can eventually work towards big changes and improvements on a national scale.

It even recommended using thicker cut chips to help save fat – which is one of our main Industry Standards. Always good to see that the type of work we are doing is supported by new research both here and abroad!
